Man Ray had been introduced to Elsa Schiaparelli by Gabriel Picabia in the 1920s in New York, and she posed for him numerous times from then on.

In this portrait, she wears a long dress with a trompe-l'oeil motif painted in the style of an antique Greek pleated garment, the result of her collaboration with the painter Jean Dunand.
