In this photograph taken by Cecil Beaton at the Château de Candé, Wallis Simpson – future Duchess of Windsor – wears a black evening ensemble with a jacket embellished with a white leather applique.
This ensemble was one of the 18 styles from the Schiaparelli Summer 1937 Haute Couture collection that Wallis Simpson selected for her spring wardrobe. It was one of the most copied of Elsa Schiaparelli's designs – it even appears briefly in the 1938 film Love Finds Andy Hardy.
